Preface

Version 3.4 introduces the long-requested setup wizard and includes several usability improvements that make Borlabs Cookie easier to use and more flexible. Alongside regular plugin updates, the Borlabs Cookie library is continuously expanded and now includes 350 packages. New packages are added almost daily and existing ones are regularly extended with additional features.

The update is currently being rolled out gradually to our testers and will be available to all customers in mid-February.

Setup Assistant

The Setup Assistant makes setting up Borlabs Cookie much easier and faster. It offers three different setup options which are explained in more detail below.

Quick Setup

With "Quick Setup", Borlabs Cookie is configured automatically. All settings are designed for safe and reliable use.

Recommended and required packages to ensure compatibility with the active theme and installed plugins are installed automatically.

The links to the privacy policy and legal notice required in the dialog are automatically detected and set up.

If a multilingual plugin is used, the dialog’s language switcher is also configured automatically.

Custom Setup

Compared to "Quick Setup", "Custom Setup" includes additional configuration options, such as layout, colors and logo, as well as the language switcher settings.

The links to the privacy policy and legal notice are also displayed so they can be reviewed for correctness

In addition, you can choose whether all settings or only essential settings are shown, and whether the sidebar in the admin area displays all menu items, commonly used ones, or only essential entries.

Guided Setup

"Guided Setup" includes all features of "Custom Setup", but first explains the basics of Borlabs Cookie and provides guidance on where to find further information.

It also outlines common troubleshooting steps that can often resolve issues quickly.

Simplified View for Easier Use

The new "Admin & Plugin Settings" page provides two new options: "Display Mode of Settings" and "WordPress Admin Sidebar Menu Mode". These options allow you to tailor Borlabs Cookie to your individual needs.

Display Mode of Settings

The "Standard" and "Simplified" options let you control how many settings are displayed. "Simplified" is intended for non-technical users, while "Standard" mode is aimed at advanced or technically experienced users who require full control.

WordPress Admin Sidebar Menu Mode

The "Simplified", "Standard", and "Expanded" options let you control how much of the sidebar menu is shown in the WordPress admin area.

"Simplified" displays only essential menu items. "Standard" shows the most commonly used settings. "Expanded" displays all menu items and matches the menu structure of earlier versions of Borlabs Cookie.

Safe Mode

The safe mode can be used to restore a website. In this mode, Borlabs Cookie compatibility patches are not loaded. This is especially helpful if an update to a third-party plugin or a compatibility patch has caused an error that makes the website unusable.

Safe mode can be enabled for all users via the PHP constant BORLABS_COOKIE_ENABLE_SAFE_MODE, or conveniently for a single user via a link in the customer portal. When activated via the customer portal link, safe mode remains active for a maximum of one hour. It can be ended earlier by deleting the borlabsCookieSafeModeHash cookie.

This action is only available for websites running Borlabs Cookie version 3.4 or later.

Further Improvements and More

Settings Revised

The "Settings" page has been renamed to "General Settings" and is now a submenu item under "Settings".

The "Display Meta Box" and "Clear Third-Party Cache" options have been moved to the new "Admin & Plugin Settings" page and no longer need to be configured per language.

The remaining settings have been reorganized into the sections "General Settings", "Consent Settings" and "Cookie Settings".

Navigation Revised

The horizontal navigation of Borlabs Cookie has been redesigned to place a stronger focus on the core, the library and the scanner.

The "Settings" menu now includes two submenu items: "General Settings", which contain the settings previously found under "Settings", and "Admin & Plugin Settings".

The menu items for Library and Scanner have been merged into "Library & Scanner". In addition, based on customer feedback, the new submenu item "Installed Packages" has been added, providing direct access to an overview of all installed packages.

TCF 2.3

The IAB TCF integration supports the mandatory disclosedVendor segment introduced with TCF version 2.3.
As a result, Borlabs Cookie 3.4 is a required update for all website operators using TCF.
The update must be installed by February 28, 2026, at the latest.

New WP-CLI Command

The new WP-CLI command plugin-config has been introduced and allows you to configure the settings of the "Admin & Plugin Settings" page.
