Table of Contents

Introduction

Version 3.5 is now available and lets you see your changes before you save them. With the new Live Preview, you can watch the dialog and your Content Blockers update in real time as you adjust colors, texts and settings.

On top of that, 3.5 brings 24 design presets for the dialog, a reworked Library with categories, search and a one-click update for all packages, and a number of improvements for consent logs, WP-CLI and the cleanup after an upgrade from Borlabs Cookie 2.x.

Live Preview

Until now, you had to save your settings and open your website to see how the dialog looks. With Borlabs Cookie 3.5, the preview comes to you. It shows the real dialog with all your unsaved changes, right next to your settings.

The Live Preview is available on all settings pages of the dialog and in the Setup Assistant. You can:

  • Switch between a desktop and a mobile view
  • See at a glance how many changes are unsaved
  • Dock, move, resize or maximize the preview window to fit your workflow

Content Blocker Preview

Content Blocker get a Live Preview, too: in their appearance settings and when you edit a Content Blocker. In the appearance settings, you can choose which preset (A–D) to preview, so you can check every variant before your visitors see it.

Design Presets

A dialog that matches your website no longer needs a lot of fine-tuning. The color assistant in the dialog's appearance settings and in the Setup Assistant now offers 24 presets, grouped into four styles:

  • Light
  • Dark
  • Bright
  • Soft

A preset applies a complete dialog appearance with one click, including colors, corner radii and fonts. Combined with the new Live Preview, you can try several presets in seconds and pick the one that fits your design best. If you want to go back to the original look, the "Default" preset restores the appearance Borlabs Cookie comes with.

Improved Library

The Library keeps growing, so we made it easier to find the right package.

Categories and Search

Every package now belongs to a category. You can filter by category, by type, or search for a package by name. All three can be combined, and each type filter shows how many packages match. Package cards now also display the package's category.

Update All

The new filter "Available Updates" lists all installed packages that have an update available. With "Update all", you install all of these updates in one go, instead of updating each package individually.

Package Information

Symbols on the package cards now show whether automatic updates overwrite the code or the translations of a package. The "Things to know" section explains these symbols and the different package types. And if no packages match your filters, none are installed yet, or all are up to date, the Library now tells you so.

Additional Improvements

Status Switch

When you install, reinstall or update a package, the installation settings now include a "Status" switch for every Service and Content Blocker. It sets whether each one is active after the installation. When reinstalling or updating, the current status is preselected, so your existing setup stays as it is.

Consent Log Retention

You can now decide how long consent logs are kept. The new setting "Consent log retention period in months" sits in the new "Consent settings" card of the Admin & Plugin Settings. The default is 24 months. Until now, consent logs were kept for the cookie lifetime. When you update, the retention period is set so that no consent log is deleted earlier than before.

The setting "Aggregate consents" has moved to the same card.

Borlabs Cookie 2.x Cleanup

If you upgraded from Borlabs Cookie 2.x, the old database tables and options are no longer needed. A new card in the Legacy Importer lets you delete them. Your Borlabs Cookie 3.x data is not affected.

Discard changes

Changed your mind? Next to the save buttons of all settings pages, you now find "Discard changes". It discards your unsaved changes and reloads the page with the saved values.

WP-CLI Commands

  • library install, library uninstall, library update and library config-template now accept a package key as well as its ID. library list shows each package's key.
  • The command plugin-config has two new options: --aggregate-consents and --consent-log-retention-period. The option --aggregate-consents has moved from general-config to plugin-config.

More Improvements

  • AI crawlers and AI agents such as ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User, MistralAI-User, meta-externalagent and Google-Agent are now recognized as bots. They are handled according to the setting "Cookies for bots/crawlers".
  • Follow-up email after a Cloud Scan: When you install all packages suggested by a Cloud Scan through bulk installation or a suggestion's details page, Borlabs Cookie now sends an email with the follow-up steps. Until now, only the Setup Assistant sent this email.
  • Widget on the privacy page: If the widget is disabled and your privacy page has no element to open the privacy preferences, the widget is now shown on the privacy page, so visitors can always change their consent.
  • Safer configuration handling: A corrupted stored configuration, for example from a migration tool, is now replaced with the default configuration and an error is logged.
  • Several bug fixes, for example for the loading indicator of the GeoIP database and IAB TCF Global Vendor List downloads.
